Exploring the Relationship Between Open Education and AI Literacies
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming education, presenting both opportunities and challenges for open educators. As AI technologies evolve, understanding and applying AI literacies becomes essential for fostering inclusive, innovative, and future-ready learning environments.
On March 7, 2025, Opened Culture and We Are Open Co-op co-hosted the webinar "AI Literacies for Open Educators" as part of Open Education Week. This interactive session, led by Dr. Doug Belshaw and Dr. Angela Gunder, introduced educators to the multifaceted concept of AI literacies, emphasizing a spectrum of competencies, skills, and mindsets crucial for navigating the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence in open education.

About the Webinar
The “AI Literacies for Open Educators” webinar explored how AI is reshaping the educational landscape and the imperative for educators to develop a nuanced understanding of AI literacies. Drawing from the recently published paper for MIT Open Learning, “AI Literacies and the Advancement of Opened Culture: Global Perspectives and Practices,” the session provided a structured introduction to AI literacies. Dr. Belshaw and Dr. Gunder guided participants through discussions on the ethical, technical, and pedagogical implications of using generative AI in open education.
The webinar also featured insights from Dr. Genevieve Smith-Nunes of the University of Roehampton and Dr. Nicola Pallitt of Rhodes University, who discussed the application of AI literacies in open educational practices. Viewers of the webinar are encouraged to participate in this initiative by sharing examples of AI literacies practices in this open access repository.
